The Selling of the Iraq War and The Politics of Fear - Vol. 3 Issue 52

There’s a very simple reason that the latest polls show two-thirds of the public supporting the Democrats “timetable” policy, rather than President Bush’s “surge” policy. A large majority of American citizens no longer believe the President is credible regarding Iraq, or the overall “War on Terror.” These are the political consequences of the Bush administration having been wrong about EVERYTHING. Perhaps we should just call it: “The wages of sin.” I know that sounds harsh. Unfortunately, facts are stubborn things. Americans aren’t stupid. They have seen Bush’s lack of wisdom, his inappropriate certainty, his lack of curiosity and the terrible suffering that has resulted from his stubborn ignorance. When these traits are coupled with his phony piety, it is no wonder the American people no longer trust him or like him. With only 22% saying that the country is on the “right track” and 27% approving Bush’s war policy, what the hell are we to think as the President danced and played African drums on the White House lawn? One can only conclude this: It is the disaster of Iraq that has turned this mediocre talent into a living example of hubris and a modern version of a Greek tragedy.

To some degree, most of us have been complicit in Bush’s downfall. By “us,” I mean not just individual citizens and politicians, but our institutions; especially the so-called, “main stream media” (MSM). Where were they? Where was the skepticism that should have prevailed in the world of big-time journalism? Where were the Academics and scholars who absolutely knew that Bush’s robotic obedience to the neo-con cult would end in tragedy? The answers to these difficult questions were actually broadcast last night on PBS. The great and courageous Bill Moyers served his country one more time by putting together a chilling and eye-opening expose of the MSM’s cowardice. See, PBS.org. If you missed the first part, don’t worry. This series of interviews is an instant classic. It will be shown again and again. It will also be available on DVD after its first airing. DON’T MISS THIS! Moyers proves once again, that our Democracy must rely on an informed public and that the survival of this nation as we know it has definitely been threatened by the craven propaganda techniques of the current regime.

Wishing us all courage, I remain

Savant
