Guiliani McRomney Versus The Ankle Biters - Vol. 3 Issue 55

Last night the American people (ok, a tiny sliver of the American people - those political junkies who tuned in to the Republican debate on MSNBC) were treated to the spectacle of the first Republican presidential debate. While it is still early in the 2008 Presidential election cycle, it is certainly not too early to make some general observations about the quality of each party’s candidates. Let’s be blunt: the Republican contenders were intellectually embarrassing. With the exception of Ron Paul, there was very little said that could be termed “conservative.” Except for McCain and Paul, this crew believes in big government and big spending. Each of them supports the Iraq War and each of them indulged in demagoguery regarding the Democrats attempts to change course in Iraq.

They all share a huge problem that has gone unnoticed. None of them can risk alienating the evangelical rightwing by criticizing President Bush’s conduct of the War. It is true that two-thirds of the nation disapprove of Bush. BUT, at least two-thirds of Republicans still support the hapless “leader of the free world.” In other words, none of these candidates can be nominated if they separate themselves from the disastrous Bush presidency. Thus, they are in a no win situation created by their party’s terrible leadership. It was painful to watch this group of knaves and fools (except for McCain and Paul) attempt to justify more of the same Bush foolishness. Each of them tried to be more macho than the other. They embarrassed themselves with tough talk based on no logic. It doesn’t matter. It’s Bush’s conduct of the WAR, stupid! If they don’t understand that, they really are dumber than they look.

Just a quick note about Rudy Guiliani; not since Thomas E. Dewey has there been a bigger fraud attempted on the voters. A thug, a philanderer, a liar and a VERY bad judge of character (see the BNB archives re: Bernard Kerik), Rudy embodies all the bad qualities of the fictitious hustler Sammy Glick in “What Makes Sammy Run?” and has none of his charm.

With the exception of Gravel and Kucinich, all of the Democratic candidates are capable of being good presidents. The Democratic Party finally has a strong bench. When you compare them with the Republicans, it is not a close call. This is what it comes down to, with the exception of McCain and Paul, the Republicans are ankle-biting dunces and the Democratic are potential statesman. I can’t wait to see Clinton, Edwards or Obama debate the Republican “winner.” That will be amusing ...

Strategically yours,

Savant
