The Death of the Clinton Legacy - Vol. 4 Issue 5

Hillary Clinton, with the help of her husband, the “Great Enabler,” has now come close to totally destroying her political future and Bill Clinton’s political legacy. Their long story, already having reached mythic pathos, is moving toward hysterical bathos. While the Clintons teeter on the edge historical infamy, they seem utterly unaware that their now malignant campaign may have dealt a fatal blow to the fortunes of the all-but-certain Democratic nominee, Barack Obama. Yet the collective narcissism and incoherent insistence of her campaign, that she is still, “in it to win it,” leaves even her supporters wondering what the hell she and Bill think they’re doing. What is apparent to the rest of us (whether dedicated, loyal and motivated members of the Democratic Party or, the now surprised and deliriously happy Republicans and “Operation Chaos” veterans) is this: the Clintons don’t care if the Democratic candidate goes down in flames and their loyalty reaches no farther than their own self interest.

Although President Clinton was a good President, his legacy after leaving office is not something to be particularly proud of (economic security for one’s family is one thing, blatant greed is another). Let’s put it this way: He’s no Jimmy Carter. Still, we must keep in mind that everything is relative. Compared to the current occupant of the White House, Bill Clinton is a giant. As Colonel Pat Lang (ret.) recently put it, “the grotesque buffoonery of this man (Bush) offends the eye and the soul.” It is a shame that Bill and Hillary may have hobbled Obama’s campaign to prevent a third Bush term. Look on the bright side, perhaps when McCain is President we’ll witness the war crimes trials of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice.  In the end, all we can do is work hard for victory over the economic royalists and their troglodyte helpers. Vote early and often.

  1. Sevant you really do need to take a step back.  This extended race is not the big deal all you blogger wonks think it is.  Yes they are staying in too long but my God man it’s only May and we have another 6 months until the election.  This back and forth will end in another 6 weeks or so and then we can watch that crazy old fart the GOP is running talk himself into a pit.  Really.

  2. I do agree that the Clinton’s have managed to self destruct and particularly in Bill’s case have mangled their reputation beyond repair. Otherwise, I have to agree with patco(?). I think that people are tired of the primaries, but I don’t think that the Clinton’s have done enough damage (although they have admittedly done damage) to enable the Republican machine to distance itself from the immense damage that the Bush policies have done to this country, indeed throughout the world. As Ralph Nader said when asked recently if his running in 2008 would be a replay of 2000, or even 2004, “...if after the last eight years...the Democrats don’t win this election hands down, they need to pack it up, go home and rethink who they are...”. The Democrats had plenty of ammunition in 2004, but apparently not enough to shift the discussion away from gay marriage and swiftboating and toward the misdeeds of the Bush administration. But much has changed in the climate of the country since then, and Barack has to keep the connection between Bush and McCain strong and alive. It ain’t gonna be easy, but certainly possible. I do have a question: your statement “...Look on the bright side, perhaps when McCain is President we’ll witness the war crimes trials of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice...” (the trials for which I still hope on a daily basis), seems to imply that we wouldn’t see that without McCain in the White House. Were you speaking simply of the time period following the Bush regime, no matter who occupies the White House? Or is it dependent on who occupies the White House in 2009?

My other question is this: do you think that the October surprise is going to be unauthorized attack on Iran?
