"Can This Really Be The End of Ricco?" (Uh, I mean Rove)

For those of you who understand where that line comes from, congratulations. For those of you who don’t remember the film gangster who asked that ultimate of rhetorical questions, I suggest you google the name, Edward G. Robinson. One’s first reaction to the news of Rove’s ouster, is that “Bush’s brain” is heading toward the private sector where he will make many thousands per speech/appearance and will receive a 7-figure advance for his ultimate-in-spin memoir. At the same time, Rove’s pal and alter-ego, George W. Bush longs for the peace and quiet of Crawford, Texas, where he will be able to stay in his perfect state of denial. Still, the question must be asked: WHY WOULD ROVE LEAVE THE WHITE HOUSE NOW?

The old cliché is still true: No one gives up power willingly. Rove is politically radioactive and the grown-ups in the Republican Party have insisted that he be sacrificed so the GOP has at least a fighting chance in the 2008 election. Rove’s departure is the ultimate sign that the Bush administration is over. The meaning should be clear to everyone. Even the “dead-enders,” (those 33-36% of American voters who still believe in the Rove created fantasy of Bush as a “leader") now must recognize that the President is merely marking time. Bush’s ability to wreak havoc on the U.S. and the world has finally been largely diminished. There is nothing positive that the Bush administration can achieve in the next 18 months. Of course, with the neo-conservatives continuing to urge preemptive military action against Iran, Bush-Cheney-Rice can still create plenty of mischief.

The White House will aggressively assert Executive privilege regarding Mr. Rove. That assertion will be tested in the Supreme Court. One can only hope that the rule of law will not be perverted to allow Mr. Rove to escape accountability. No worries: As the President said yesterday on the White House lawn, “Karl Rove is moving on down the road.” Then Bush turned to his beloved Turd Blossom and in his usual elegant prose said, “I’ll be on the road behind you here in a little bit.” Finally, the two malefactors hugged before flying off to Texas together for vacation. See, WashingtonPost.com.

Hoping “W’s” remaining 500-plus days pass quickly, I remain
